End-of-life doula, educator and writer

Virginia Chang, Ph.D., is a certified end-of-life doula, educator, and writer. She has been featured nationally and internationally on CNN and MIT News, and she regularly speaks on end-of-life issues at hospitals, medical schools, colleges, and community groups. She has written on death, mortality, and the doula work in Scientific American, Intima, and INELDA. Her essay “A Body in Motion” was a 2022 Paul Kalanithi Writing Award Finalist

During her residency, she will continue to develop her manuscript-in-progress, expanding it with additional details and stories while researching Buddhist texts and teachings. Each chapter will discuss one contemplation and conclude with a tip on meditation with a mantra.

Artist, geographer, student of the sky

Amy Holiday earned a Bachelor of Science in Geography from Northern Arizona University in 1996 and moved to Maryland to map sea ice for the Navy. She traveled through the United States and Mexico for four years taking photos of the moon and sky. In 2022, she returned to Maryland to reunite with the Red Dirt Studio community where she currently creates work about the sky.

During her La Baldi residency, she plans to collect twilight imagery in Montegiovi. She is interested in experiencing the sky in a new location and weighing the environmental factors that impact its appearance: light, pollution, particulates, and humidity. She also intends to experiment with the use of mirrors to access the sky from spaces that have barriers: ceilings, walls, and canopies.

Artist, Urban/Rural environments, landscape

Aletta de Jong, a recipient of a 2024 La Baldi Residency award, uses traditional methods and contemporary knowledge concerning agriculture, recycling, domestic skills, and survival strategies. She researches the idea of landscape as the current and potential interaction between people and their environment. This is done by including agriculture, raw materials and the mineral resources upon which man is physically, socially and economically dependent as substantive elements within her work. She is a cofounder of Ruralis- Rural Association for Regenerative Development, an organization that has members living and working in the urban environment of Rotterdam or amidst the River Dão’s watershed in Portugal.

During her La Baldi residency, Aletta will focus on the landscape through the lens of its minerals and flora. She will talk to experts such as farmers and scientists, and, more importantly, seek knowledge and expertise from the community.

Artist, writer, executive director The Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts

Rebecca Harvey has completed international residencies in countries from Sweden to China, Canada to Italy, and Iceland to Germany. She regularly writes about the intertwined history of the decorative arts, and articles featuring her work have appeared in Studio Potter and American Craft. She was appointed Executive Director of The Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts (The Bray), a creative center based in Helena, Montana, in July 2022.

Her residency plan is based in the town of Montegiovi itself. From daily walks, she will construct “object maps” working and reworking parts to then reanimate and reconstruct a version of this world, a physical, tangible representation of the relationship between elements in space. She is interested in elevating the small and the curious to unwind time and explore the spaces between them.

Artist, educator, video, new media and interactive technologies

Stefani Byrd’s work incorporates video, new media, and interactive technologies that address issues such as digital feminism, gun violence, and barriers to empathy in a digitally networked society. She has exhibited nationally and internationally, and her work is in the permanent collections of MOCA Georgia and the Columbus Museum of American Art. She is currently an Assistant Professor in the Film Studies Department at the University of North Carolina, Wilmington.

She has conducted extensive archival research throughout the Southeast including Rabun Gap, Georgia. for her film, “The Country Dwellers,” a virtual reality film which traces the connections between Appalachian folk magic and the rise of Neo-Paganism. Her objective during the La Baldi residency is to continue editing and to conduct additional research. She is in post-production for the first chapter of the project that traces the lives of women in Appalachia from the 1800s to the 1960s.

Artemis Herber is an award-winning German-born artist of Greek heritage, who has exhibited nationally and internationally. Her selected exhibitions include those at the Buffalo AKG Museum, NY; American University Museum of the Katzen Art Center, Washington DC; San Jose Museum of Art, CA; Goethe-Institut, Washington DC; Cheltenham Museum UK; Kunstverein Paderborn, Germany, and Villa Bianca, Thessaloniki, Greece.

Her project will focus on the historical and present-day significance of chestnut and olive trees. Her goal is to artistically investigate the history, current condition, and land the trees represent while exploring how these elements intersect with the broader concept of the commons.

Designer, artist, educator, textile development and wearable technology

Anke Loh, a recipient of the 2024 La Baldi Residency Award, is a designer, artist, and educator, who works at the intersection of art, technology, and fashion with a focus on textile development and wearable technology. Loh’s multi-disciplinary approach to art and design has attracted international media, recognition and awards, including the Laureate at the Festival International des Arts et de la Mode in Hyères, France. Her work was featured at New York’s Fashion Week, Paris’ Centre Pompidou, Japan’s Osaka Collection Show, and Mode Expo Antwerp in Belgium. Her collaborative practice explores ways of building community through craft and making. Loh invites scientists, designers, artists and community members to collaborate on innovative projects such as touch sensitive embroidered textiles that trigger pre-recorded soundscapes. She also explores the inherent meaning and symbolism imbedded into everyday materials such as wire, which is used to build fences, and serves as a conduit for communication across borders.

During her residency she hopes to deepen her understanding of how nature can affect the five senses. Her fascination is how healing can be enhanced through creativity and the art of making/using our five senses in combination with smart textiles guided by the question: What makes us feel alive?

Poet, educator

Elisávet Makridis is a Pushcart Prize- and Best New Poets-nominated Pontic Greek poet-educator. She is the winner of Ruminate Magazine’s 2022 Poetry Prize judged by Rajiv Mohabir and Inverted Syntax’s Sublingua Prize for Poetry, as well as a finalist for the 20th annual Tom Howard/Margaret Reid Poetry Contest and Sewanee Review’s 5th annual Poetry, Fiction, and Nonfiction Contest. Her poems appear in Hayden's Ferry Review, Indiana Review, Canthius, and other publications. Her debut book-in-progress was most recently shortlisted for Poetry London’s 2023 Pamphlet Prize judged by Jay Bernard.

While at La Baldi, Elisávet plans to develop a long poem that incorporates translations of Pontic Greek speech lifted from her great-grandmothers’ life-testimonies, both refugees and survivors of genocide, to reconceive linguistic fluency as the making of a polyphonic, synaptic landscape between herself and Pontic Greek, a now endangered dialect.

In addition, she will work on the substantial completion of a long erasure poem of the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne, an international peace treaty that ratified the first massive compulsory population transfer of the twentieth century between Greece and Türkiye, leading to the genocidal expulsion of her great-great and great-grandparents from their ancestral homeland in the northeast of Türkiye.

Patricia Alessandrini is a composer/sound artist creating compositions, installations, and performances, presented in the Americas, Asia, Australia, and over fifteen European countries, and in festivals including Gaudeamus, Mostly Mozart, Musica Strasbourg, RainyDays, Salzburg Biennale, and Wittener Tage. She was featured in the Sound Kitchen Series with the Ensemble Intercontemporain in 2015-6 and awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in Composition in 2021.

She holds two Ph.Ds., from Princeton University and the Sonic Arts Research Centre respectively, and performs research on embodied interaction, including inclusive instrument design. She is Associate Professor of Composition at Stanford University, and her portrait CD with Riot Ensemble was released on Huddersfield Contemporary Records in 2023. Her second portrait CD featuring Arditti Quartet and others will be released in 2024.

While in residence at La Baldi, she will work collaboratively with Marisol Montalvo, on an hour-long staged work for two sopranos, with Marisol Montalvo in the leading role and Donatienne Michel-Dansac in a supporting role, based on a libretto by Alexandra Kleeman. The collaborative musical performance is founded on CyberFeminist principles and how women interconnect and communicate via technology between space and time.

Marisol Montalvo is an American soprano who has worked closely with today’s leading composers, including Matthias Pintscher, Kaija Saariaho, George Benjamin, Unsuk Chin, Jörg Widmann, and Wolfgang Rihm.

As a soloist in orchestral concerts, Montalvo enjoys a working relationship with Maestro Christoph Eschenbach, who conducted her Carnegie Hall debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra. She has worked with him including the Vienna Philharmonic, the Houston Symphony, the London Philharmonic, the Munich Philharmonic, the National Symphony, and the Orchestre de Paris. Most recently, she performed with the Konzerthaus Orchestra, Berlin, NHK Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo, and the Stockholm Royal Symphony Orchestra.

Her intention for this residency is to work with her fellow collaborator, the composer Dr. Patricia Alessandrini, to create a musical performance based on CyberFeminist principles and how women interconnect and communicate via technology between space and time.

Writer, composer, executive director of the Tasmanian Writers’ Centre

Joe Bugden is a writer and composer who moved to Hobart, Tasmania, in 1999 to assume the position of Executive Director of the Tasmanian Writers’ Centre. Joe has worked with the Australian Museum, the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, and Object Design, (formerly the Crafts Council of NSW) where he held the position of Assistant General Manager until moving to Hobart.

His short fiction has been published in various literary journals, and his first collection of short stories Incidental Dreams from a Myoclonic Jerk has recently been published by Ginninderra Press. He also composes music. In 2002, “The Listening Post” (for solo viola) was commissioned by the Hobart City Council and was included in a soundscape as part of the City of Hobart Memorial to recipients of the Victoria Cross.

He intends to use his time at La Baldi to research and draft the libretto for a new chamber opera. This opera has the working title, “Luca Pacioli and the Golden Mean” which will be based on the life of Luca Pacioli, an Italian mathematician who published the influential book Summa in 1494, giving a summary of all the mathematics known at that time.

He is also setting the Latin Requiem Mass text to music for two solo female voices and chamber choir, and he will use his time to further develop that work.

David Hess’s pieces can be seen in numerous private and public collections such as the American Visionary Art Museum, Johns Hopkins Hospital, and Baltimore Washington International Airport. David has also undertaken over twenty-five large-scale public art commissions in the Baltimore/ Washington, DC region as well as in St. Louis, Missouri and Greensboro, North Carolina.

During his residency at La Baldi, he will continue to explore Neo-materialism – a theory that emphasizes the agency and materiality of objects by exploring their significance beyond their utilitarian function. He plans to delve into the nuanced landscapes and sociocultural layers of the region, exploring the local community and its spaces as a mode of aesthetic inquiry, invoking sensory experiences embedded within Montegiovi and the surrounding countryside.

Writer, translator, Literary Consultant Nottara Theatre

Maria-Gabriela Constantin is a trilingual writer and translator. She lived in Budapest, Hungary, and in Greece before she repatriated to her homeland of Bucharest, Romania. She works as the Literary Consultant at Nottara Theatre. Bucharest. Gabriela has published three volumes of short prose and several works of translations. She is a frequent contributor to Romanian literary journals.

For this residency she plans to work on her fourth volume of prose, which she hopes to complete and publish this year.

Multimedia artist, translator/editor

Rob Croll is a multimedia artist whose work combines image, text, and sound in a variety of forms ranging from installation to performance. In addition to his artistic practice, Rob has worked extensively as a Spanish–English literary translator and editor; his publications include the three volumes of Ricardo Piglia’s The Diaries of Emilio Renzi as well as books by Hebe Uhart, Javier Sinay, and Gustavo Roldán.

His selected exhibitions include Works on Paper, Chicago, 2023; Oversight, Chicago, 2023, and Graduate Exhibition One, Chicago, 2024.

As a La Baldi resident, Rob plans to further develop a new cameraless photographic process. While he has used cyanotype chemistry, he is beginning to explore other alternative photographic processes; he hopes to create his own anthotype emulsions using site-specific materials. Cultivate’s focus on land and the commons complements his practice by making it more sustainable by reducing waste and reusing materials.

Hillery Stone is a poet and essayist. Her work has appeared in The New York Times, Guernica, Eclectic Lit, Shenandoah and the American Literary Review. Her New York Times Modern Love essay, “The Dentist Who Treated My Divorce,” was excerpted in Frank Bruni’s New York Times popular “For the Love of Sentences” newsletter, featuring the best sentences from publications across the US.

Stone has held faculty positions at New York University and Baruch College teaching writing, and she spoke at the 2023 and 2024 Power of Narrative Conference at Boston University. Her talk on writing personal essays was featured in Harvard’s Neiman Storyboard where her writing was characterized as “earned wisdom that pushes essay past literary selfies to deeply reported inquiries.”

She is at work on a memoir.

Maya Bird-Murphy is a designer, educator, and the founder of Mobile Makers, an award-winning nonprofit organization bringing design and skill-building workshops to underrepresented communities. Verda Alexander is a Nicaragua-born, San Francisco-based designer, climate activist, and artist. She is the Editor-at-Large at Metropolis Magazine, co-founder of Studio O+A, and co-host of “Break Some Dishes,” a podcast that engages innovators in conversations about meeting the challenges of climate change.

Over the past decade she has focused on experimental projects: installations, interactive exhibits, and a mobile design lab that engaged with communities across California. Olgens Cenejuste is a young Haitian poet and wordsmith who currently lives in Marrakesh, Morocco. He has won three international poetry prizes including the Matiah Eckhard Prize and the Poesie en Liberte Prize, France. In 2023, he won the Castello di Duino Prize, Italy. His work has been published in several European literary anthologies such as such as Florillèges des treizes, Montpellier (France) in 2021, and L'antholologie de Poésie en Liberté, Paris (France) in 2023. Other work has appeared in il Castello Di Duino anthology, Trieste (Italy) in 2023.

While in residence, he plans to compose a collection of poems in French entitled “At the Twilight of the Stars.” Olgens’s project focuses on the sense of restoring the earth and the human condition, and making us more sensitive to others as better inhabitants of the world. To him, this is the mission of poetry: “to save humanity from its cruelty, from its fragility.”

Mauro Colarieti is a Ph.D. student in game studies at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart. He made his debut at seventeen with Constellation of pimples (Lettere Animate, 2015), a coming-of-age novel translated into Spanish, French and Portuguese. His short stories have been published in various literary magazines such as Nido di Gazza, Carie and SPLIT, while his scholarly essays will appear soon for Lexington Books and Vernon Press.

Diamonds rain on Jupiter is a novel that mixes teen and new-weird fiction. He is currently developing the first draft of this work. The goal of his project is to use words to paint a raw portrait of adolescence in Italian rural areas, carrying out part of the novel's drafting at Montegiovi, which will add authenticity to his work

Conductor, pianist, improvisor, researcher

Hans Kretz is a conductor, pianist, improvisor, and researcher. He holds a Ph.D. in Music from the University of Leeds and a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Paris 8 Vincennes-Saint-Denis. He is a Lecturer at Stanford University, where he currently conducts and directs the Stanford New Ensemble.

As part of his curating and performance activities, he has been developing an interdisciplinary approach that led him to reevaluate the relation between written and oral practices, conventionally notated and graphic scores, improvisation, and authorial practices.

During his La Baldi residency, he will rethink the notion of community-building through the lens of sonic online performances. The different approaches to musical expressivity and musical explorations that emerged in the context of the global pandemic led him to develop this practice of and inquiry. He hopes to further expand this work while in Montegiovi, collaborating with local and international musicians.

Tatiana Istomina’s projects have been featured in exhibitions and screenings across the United States and abroad including the AIR gallery, Blue Star Contemporary Art Museum, the Drawing Center, the Bronx Museum, Gaîté Lyrique, and Haus der Kulturen der Welt. Tatiana is a recipient of multiple awards including the Joan Mitchell Foundation grant, the Chenven Foundation grant, the Puffin Foundation grant, and the Individual Artist Fellowship from the New Jersey Council of the Arts. She worked at multiple residencies such as Yaddo, the Jan van Eyck Academie (Netherlands), RAVI (Belgium) and AIR-In-Silo (Austria). She holds a doctoral degree in physics (Yale University, 2009), and an MFA in fine arts (Parsons New School 2011).

During her time at La Baldi she plans to expand her practice of working with laboratory flies to the fruit flies living under natural conditions, in the gardens and orchards surrounding Montegiovi. Tatiana will apply her laboratory experience to finding and cultivating a small colony of fruit flies in the wild, and building miniature sculptures to try to integrate these constructions into the flies’ natural habitat. Documented through photography and video, these interventions will try to assess the gap between our theoretical understanding of biological life and the empirical reality of materially interacting with another, very dissimilar species.

Artist, Landscape, Air Reports

Alex Grünenfelder is a Canadian and Swiss artist studying the human relationship to landscape. His work employs performance, informal pedagogy, and cultural conventions of tasting. Through adapting and transforming historical and present-day landscape-oriented vernacular practices, his projects seek an expanded engagement with place.

During his residency, Alex will conduct a series of site-specific Air Reports which are part of his Air Tasting practice. Each Air Report is a brief, written analysis of the visual, haptic, and olfactory qualities of the air within the moment of tasting. Constituting a form of research-as-performance, the reports will be published in real time at twitter.com/airtasting and archived at airtasting.com. Additionally, he hopes to learn more about cultural practices that engage with the landscape, a focus of his on-going research.

Lisa Darms is a writer and archivist based in New York City and Connecticut. She is the author of The Riot Grrrl Collection (Feminist Press 2013) and co-author of Weight of the Earth: The Tape Journals of David Wojnarowicz (Semiotext(e) 2018). Her recently completed book HAGiographies considers the responsibilities of the fan-archivist-biographer to her subjects. As Senior Archivist at NYU’s Fales Library Special Collections from 2009 to 2016, Lisa managed and co-curated the Downtown Collection of archives of artists, performers, and art collectives, and was founder and curator of the Riot Grrrl Collection. She is currently Executive Director of Hauser & Wirth Institute, a nonprofit organization devoted to artist archives.

She will continue to work on her book-in-progress, Afterdamp, which focuses on attempts to form Utopian communities using her biography to structure the text which is written in longform essay and memoir.

Eva Myers completed the contemporary dance program at Concordia University, Montreal, Canada in 2019, graduating with a BFA in 2021. She co-founded and continues to run an artistic and community-based space in Montréal known as “In the Barn.” This past July, she was a participating artist in ATLAS, a dance creation program situated within the ImPulsTanz festival in Vienna, Austria. In October 2023, Eva continued her work on a piece combining dance, print making, and film in the Parbluex Inception Residency in Montreal.

While at La Baldi, Eva will collaborate with Rahul Tiwari, also a La Baldi resident, to create a multimedia work which combines storytelling with layered observations. They plan to make a short experimental film and accompanying print media as they develop dialogues between movement, illustration, text, and video.

Rahul Tiwari is an artist and community-based researcher currently residing in Varanasi, India, where he earned a BFA and an MFA from Banaras Hindu University. In 2023, he received the Bhojpuri Painting Researcher Award in addition to an Excellence Award from the Banaras Hindu Alumni Cell, Uttar Pradesh, India. In 2020, he founded Gawanhi Gandh, a community arts and culture platform, involving a digital and physical events’ exchange around Bhojpuri folk traditions. Rahul continues to develop collaborative ways of safeguarding and expanding visual and oral folklore.

As a La Baldi resident, he will collaborate with Eva Myers, who he met in Varanasi, India, in October 2022. Their plan includes deepening their cross-cultural artistic exchange through site-specific creation. In addition to documenting their experiential collaboration, the film and paper artefacts they produce will mix their perspectives and their integration within the Montegiovi landscape.

Composer, cellist, vocalist

April Dawn Guthrie is a composer/cellist/vocalist and Cherokee Nation citizen originally from Kansas City. She has recorded and performed with the Alan Parsons Project, Bjork, Bonobo, and Halsey. Guthrie’s focus on contemporary music/performance art/improvisation has led to work with The Industry, Joan LaBarbara, and John Zorn among others.

Her composition and collaboration with Matthew Paul Olmos of so go the ghosts of Mexico, part three, a poet sings the daughter songs was recognized for Best Original Music/Songs of 2019 by Theatre Jones.

Matthew Paul Olmos is a Mexican American playwright and lyricist. He is a three-time Sundance Institute Fellow/Resident and an inaugural Dramatists Guild Foundation Catalyst Fellow.

His former residencies include the Baryshnikov Arts Center, Center Theatre Group, Geffen Playhouse, and the New York Theatre Workshop. He has received the Arizona Theatre Company’s National Latine Playwrights Award and Repertorio Espanol’s Nuestra Voces Playwriting Competition. His play I put the fear of mexico in’em is published by Samuel French and NoPassport Press. A new work will have its world premiere at Steppenwolf in 2024.

Jenn Alandy Trahan is a Jones Lecturer at Stanford University where she was a 2016 – 2018 Wallace Stegner Fellow in Fiction. Her publications include Permafrost, Blue Mesa Review, Harper's, One Story, and The Best American Short Stories. She received Special Mention, Pushcart Prize (2022), and a Distinguished Story Award, The Best American Short Stories 2021.

Jenn's work has been generously supported by the Elizabeth George Foundation and by writing residencies in Gullkistan, (Iceland), and in Las Vegas, Nevada at The Writer's Block. She received the Leo Love Merit Scholarship in Prose to the Taos Summer Writers’ Conference, 2015. She plans to complete a full draft of her book and new short stories during her residency in Montegiovi.
