Artist

Elzbieta Sikorska was born in Warsaw, Poland, and graduated from the Art Academy there. After leaving Poland and a short stay in Germany, she moved to the US about 30 years ago. She later settled in the Washington, D.C. area, where she still lives and works.

She has been an active artist all her life, exhibiting her work nationally and internationally. She has explored many different media and has been working on paper for the last twenty years. Her work has transitioned from pencil to large-scale multi-media drawings and, recently, to more complex compositions.

Her works are in many collections, including the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, DC, the National Museum in Krakow, Poland, and the Washington DC Art Bank. She has received numerous grants and awards and participated in multiple residencies and collaborative projects.

Nature has often been an inspiration for her art. She has been working on a project provisionally titled Landscape and Memory. This is a long line of multimedia drawings closely connected to being outside and drawing inspiration from the landscape and natural surroundings.

Suji Kwock Kim, a recipient of a 2025 La Baldi Residency Award, is author of NOTES FROM THE DIVIDED COUNTRY, which received the Walt Whitman Award from the Academy of American Poets, Addison Metcalf Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, Whiting Writers’ Award, Northern California Book Award, THE NATION/ Discovery Award, and was a finalist for the Griffin Prize; PRIVATE PROPERTY, a multimedia play performed at Playwrights Horizons and Edinburgh Festival Fringe; NOTES FROM THE NORTH, which received the U.K.'s International Book & Pamphlet Award; and DISORIENT: FUGUES & ASSIMILAMENTATIONS, which is forthcoming. A dual U.K./ U.S. citizen, she divides her time between Princeton, where she is a 2024-2025 Hodder Fellow, and London, where she serves as a Trustee for the U.K. Charity Commission and CNK, formerly the European Alliance for Human Rights in North Korea, a NGO based in New Malden, Surrey, home to the largest community of North Korean refugees in the world outside Asia.

While at La Baldi, she will focus on her manuscript-in-progress, DISORIENT: the “Mottetti” section and the section entitled “The Melancholy of Anatomy.” The “Mottetti" are both inspired by and depart from Eugenio Montale’s brilliant lyric cycle of the same name, while “The Melancholy of Anatomy” is in conversation with Dante’s Commedia, Robert Burton’s The Anatomy of Melancholy, and her Princeton University colleague, Anne Cheng’s, The Melancholy of Race. The project she plans to undertake while at La Baldi is to draft these two lyric cycles in Montegiovi, Italia, in the heart of Tuscany, in the country of Dante and Montale, not far from the capital of the Roman Empire — and to write as many poems as possible during the residency period.

Olimpia De Girolamo was born in Naples, Italy. She graduated in Philosophy and specialized in theatrical and cinematographic languages. She has lived in Switzerland since 2002 where she teaches Italian and deals with theater as an author, actress and trainer. She is co-artistic director of the Agorà Teatro di Magliaso (www.agorateatro.com), a space for research and training built in the garden of her house. With the theatrical monologue “La Mar “she won the Fersen Prize in 2018 and was a finalist for the Women and Theater Award in 2017. In 2021, she won the Opennet as part of the Solothurn Literary Days with the story "The first step. The assault of the past which became the novel Everything we have been published by Gabriele Capelli Editore in 2022 and translated into French in 2024 by Edition La Veilleuse. In June 2023, she carried out a writing residency as part of the international project Cultivate/La Baldi. In summer of 2023, she won the Pro Helvetia Literary Creation Scholarship with the project that in the spring of 2024 became her second novel Will published by Gabriele Capelli.

The theme of her current work concerns memory, the way in which everyone chooses to tell themselves and others their story. It would be very important for her to enter a relationship with the local people, who have a story to share with her. In return, she would like to make available to the community an autobiographical writing workshop, for two half-days in which she could lead theatrical training as a tool to channel the writing of the self.

Chris (Christina) Willey is a full-time painter who travels to juried plein air events throughout the United States, including En Plein Air Texas, Telluride, Plein Air Southwest, Shadows-on-the-Teche, Mountain Maryland, Estes Park, and others. She has had artist residencies at I-Park, East Haddam, Connecticut, and Art Center Padula, Padula, Italy. Chris has taught and conducted workshops in the United States, England, the Netherlands, France, and Croatia.

She has an M.F.A. in Illustration from Syracuse University, Syracuse, New York, and a B.F.A. in Drawing/Painting from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, Nebraska. She was a Professor of Art at the University of Central Missouri for 22 years. An illustrator, painter, and graphic designer, Chris has won over 74 awards in many international, national and regional juried shows, and her work is held in private and corporate collections in the United States, Netherlands, and France.

Kristine Heykants uses photography and video in pursuit of realism in her subject matter, desiring to unearth the humanity that connects us all. Through narrative and conceptual works, she makes sense of experience while searching for beauty in the familiar and mundane. She is interested in Carl Jung’s concept of archetypes – symbols and behaviors that have existed throughout time – and questions their colonial and patriarchal origins. Historical representation of women is a recurring theme in her work. Throughout her career, research and travel to historic and ancient sites has provided an important basis for comparison to contemporary American culture.

A longtime resident of Minneapolis, Kristine has participated in local Public Art initiatives, and the Lakkos Residency in Heraklion, Greece. She has received grants from the Jerome Foundation, McKnight Foundation and the Minnesota State Arts Board. She exhibits widely and teaches photography and video at Minneapolis College.

At La Baldi, she wants to research and to document remains from Etruscan settlements for her project, “Ruination.”

Jeanean Songco Martin is a painter and art educator. She has a B.F.A. from the Maryland Institute College of Art, and she has been concentrating on landscape and figurative painting for thirty years. Jeanean loves painting the Maryland countryside as well as traveling to distant locations to teach and to work and is very active in the arts community with portrait, life drawing, and plein air groups. She has taught at Common Ground on the Hill at McDaniel College, Hood College, Montgomery College, Delaplaine Visual Arts Education Center, and Rockville Arts Place (United States). She has conducted plein-air workshops nationally in the U.S. in Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Mexico, Georgia, South Carolina and internationally in Ireland, England, France and Germany. She exhibits widely and has had exhibits at major universities and colleges. Jeanean is a member of the Oil Painters of America, Portrait Society of America, and Maryland Federation of Art. She was a founding member of the Griffin Art Center and was president of the NOMA Gallery in Frederick, Maryland. She was recently a resident artist at the Art Center Padula in Italy.

Kevin C. Pyle, a recipient of a 2025 La Baldi Residency award, is an artist and author/illustrator of numerous graphic novels and non-fiction comics. He also makes installations, videos and performances that grow out of the practice of drawing and visual storytelling. His books have received both silver and bronze medals from the Society of Illustrators and his work has been presented or exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Mass MOCA, MOMA PS 1, and numerous gallery settings. He was an Atelier Resident artist at Princeton University. His current graphic essays can be seen in the L.A. Times, the Evergreen Review, and World War3 Illustrated.

The residency will provide an opportunity to pursue and deepen several aspects of his artistic practice, most notably the use of walking and observation as a generative experience for creating work that captures the bioregional nature of a place and its shifting meanings.

La Baldi/Salamanca Arts Center Residency Award

Mat Ward investigates the acoustic structure of sound through the use of field recordings. He creates auditory profiles from specific locations to use as unique compositional devices. His practice has taken him to Italy three times resulting in film, exhibition and performance projects. His work in cinema involves writing and performing contemporary soundtracks for avant-garde silent films. Ward collaborates extensively and co-ordinates the International Art Collective, Then She Reaches For The Gun, featuring over 50 musicians from 20 countries. He is regularly commissioned to produce works for Australian festivals, exhibits globally, and has released more than 20 albums across multiple genres as a solo artist, ensemble leader and collaborator. His career goal is to produce high quality contemporary works that collapse genres, expand audience engagement with sound art, and challenge established notions of what constitutes music.

At La Baldi, his goal is to produce a long-format sound work from field recordings that respond to and evoke the unique acoustic identity of the countryside and history.

Xosé A. Neira Cruz (Compostela, 1968) is a journalist, writer and professor at the Faculty of Communication Sciences at the University of Santiago de Compostela. PhD in Journalism and in Italian Philology by the University of Santiago, as well as PhD in Law by the University of La Rioja, he has developed an active career as an editor, cultural manager and curator of exhibitions. In the literary field he won awards such as the Merlín, the Barco de Vapor,the  Raíña Lupa, the Repsol Novel Award, the Manuel María Theater Award, and the Fiz Vergara Vilariño and the Xosé M. López Ardeiro Poetry Awards, among others. Outside of Galicia, he achieved the Lazarillo Prize, and he was also awarded as the Best Foreign Book Published in Brazil in 2008. In other hand, he received on three occasions the White Ravens Award from the Internationale Jugendbibliothek of Munich. In addition, he was included on the prestigious "Los Mejores" List of the Banco del Libro in Venezuela. With a published literary work exceeding thirty titles, he was guest author in the Book Fairs of Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Havana, Guadalajara (Mexico), in the Berlin Litteratur Festival and in the "Favole in crescita" Festival, which included a creative residence in the Monastery of Montecassino. In Italy, books by Neira Cruz have been studied at the University of Bologna, where four "tesi di laurea" have already been defended about his literary work.

Artist, Writer, Executive Director The Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts

Rebecca Harvey has completed international residencies in countries from Sweden to China, Canada to Italy, and Iceland to Germany. She regularly writes about the intertwined history of the decorative arts, and articles featuring her work have appeared in Studio Potter and American Craft. She was appointed Executive Director of The Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts (The Bray), a creative center based in Helena, Montana, in July 2022.

Her residency plan is based in the town of Montegiovi itself. From daily walks, she will construct “object maps” working and reworking parts to then reanimate and reconstruct a version of this world: a physical, tangible representation of the relationship between elements in space. She is interested in elevating the small and the curious to unwind time and explore the spaces between them.

The award-winning Years of Skywas produced by Scripts Up! at 59E59 Theatres. Other performed work includes: Jane, Queen’s Foole, which was second in the Julie Harris Playwriting Contest; Hamlet Leaves England appeared on the Pittsburgh New Works Mainstage; Two Sisters was read in the 2022 Inge Play Festival’s New Play Lab, and Secret Places was produced by New Circle Theatre Company. Spell, a riff-in-verse on Shakespeare’s The Tempest, appeared in Alumnae Theatre’s New Ideas Festival. The 2020 ATHE Conference presented her work, Light.

New York Quarterly Books published two poetry collections, The Still Position (2010) and Living with You (2012). Artist

Andrea McCluskey’s work is divided between spirit/intellect and abstraction/figuration. In her art she explores change and transformation. Andrea is curious when shapes and forms reappear after some length of time hinting at a place in her psyche that stores this symbolic language. She was born into a Polish-American community in Yonkers, New York. At an early age, she heard two languages and experienced rich traditions. Her parents were members of a Polish church where both Latin and Polish were spoken. Andrea was surrounded by incantations, incense, darkness, and Baroque art influencing her art later in life. Her family moved out of Yonkers to a more suburban area, and it was here that Andrea came in direct contact with the natural world. These two worlds collide in her art making. Her work gravitates between biomorphic shapes juxtaposed to the grid and loose forms reigned in by straight lines.

In collaboration with Lisa Sheirer, they will use the residency time to research the area of Montegiovi and especially the Monte Amiata volcano and the watershed of the Ente, the Zancona, and the Vivo Rivers to examine the flora, fauna and geology of the region. They intend to question the similarities and differences of the Tuscan landscape to their own home region. Using this different environmental perspective in another part of the world will prompt their discussions and shared studio time in this region. They intend to create an active mixed media depiction of the watershed region.

Il lavoro di Andrea McCluskey si divide tra spirito/intelletto e astrazione/figurazione. Nella sua arte esplora il cambiamento e la trasformazione. Artist

Lisa Sheirer lives and works in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. She has a B.F.A. in painting and printmaking from West Virginia University and a M.F.A. in sculpture from the University of Notre Dame. Sheirer works in a variety of mediums: pixels, clay, ink, paint, wood, and sound are among her materials. Native flora, fauna, and mycoflora of the Catoctin Mountains have been the basis for a recent series. Lisa has an active social media account showing plant life through the seasons in the Catoctin mountains. Lisa's creative efforts aim to educate people about the importance of sustaining wild places. Her public art projects include a ceramic mural at Baltimore-Washington International Airport commissioned by the Maryland Department of Transportation and a glass mural installation in Western Maryland Health System's lobby. In the fall of 2023, Lisa self-published the artist book WaterShed with the help of a generous NEA/Frederick Arts Council grant.

Artist, Founder of Alchemy Residency

A visual artist and trained chef, Claire's Canadian-based, art practice explores and documents the making and sharing of art, food, and dialogue. She is the founder of Alchemy, an artists' led residency offered on the Toronto Islands and in rural Prince Edward County, Ontario. Alchemists share their practices in kitchens, studios, wineries, and, ultimately, the communities they visit and return to. More than 100 artists worldwide have participated in Alchemy since its 2015 founding. Claire was awarded an M.A. in 2024 from the Nova Scotia School of Art and Design (NSCAD University) for her thesis: Alchemy: The Evolution of a Social Practice. With a B.A. from Concordia University (Montreal) and a culinary arts diploma from the George Brown Chef’s School (Toronto), she also studied journalism and public policy at New York University. Now a public arts advocate and facilitator, Claire has served as a press secretary in New York's City Hall, and as Chief of Communications in two of Canada's leading teaching and research hospitals.

Claire wants to reflect on her ten years of art-making experiences in the County of Prince Edward in Ontario, Canada to inform an art-making project at La Baldi. She plans to translate her North American viticulture knowledge (and learn from) the terroir of Montegiovi. While separated by oceans but seemingly united in goals of sustainability and collaboration, the opportunity to visually compare and contrast genius loci of two rural communities with stated intentions of sharing community will allow her to develop and share a richer understanding of the role place/terroir plays in working with collage, paper, plants and found objects.

Composer

Born in Hobart, Tasmania in 1997, Dominic grew up playing the drums in local bands before shifting focus to composition. Dominic’s music has been commissioned and performed both locally and overseas in Canada, Italy, Germany, and England. He has collaborated with ensembles such as Decibel New Music Ensemble, CMR Contemporary Music Ensemble, Labyrinth Ensemble, Ensemble Mania, The Hedberg Ensemble, The Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM), and the Tasmanian Youth Orchestra, and soloists such as Jan Gerdes, Antony Gray, Lore Amenabar Larrañaga, Jennifer Yu, Judith Dodsworth, Leigh Harrold, and Michael Kieran Harvey. He has studied in Australia with several composers, as well as in the United Kingdom with Michael Finnissy.

The intersection of music and history has been a long-standing preoccupation for Dominic. Music history of a personal nature has been particularly fruitful, evident in past pieces which have explored the colonial and Indigenous branches of his family tree.

The La Baldi Foundation's Cultivate Arts Residency offers him the opportunity to delve into the previously-unexplored Italian side of his family history.

Curator, Cultural Researcher, Writer

Benedetta Castrioto is a curator, cultural researcher and writer passionate about multidisciplinary projects. She is interested in institutional critique and in the study of cultural production as socio-political praxis. Prior to working as an independent curator, she was the program manager of Zoma Museum, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. She led projects in the US, Ethiopia, and the UK, and with partners and donors from Turkey, Italy, Germany, France and the Netherlands. In 2023-24 she was Curatorial Fellow at the DC Arts Center, in Washington, D.C., and she is a 2024 Global Cultural Relations Fellow. Benedetta has an M.A. in Arts and Cultural Enterprise from Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London, and an M.Sc. in Environment and Development from the London School of Economics.

At La Baldi she plans to conduct observations on ants and cicadas while completing pre-selected readings toward the development of a multispecies project inspired by the Multispecies Salon. She will also visit Il Giardino di Daniel Spoerri to better understand the artist’s dialogue with the land and his gathering and hospitality practices in continuation of A Plastic Tea Party –an ongoing project exploring the topics of laboring, pausing, and gathering.

Benedetta Castrioto è una curatrice, ricercatrice culturale e scrittrice appassionata di progetti multidisciplinari.
