Meeting Ground: Impressions

In the Impressions project, participants explore a grounding ritual in which they prostrate themselves on the earth while saying a short gatha or prayer. Documenting the impression they have made and returning to repeat the ritual, they observe the impact of time and natural forces on the evidence of their action.

Drawing on indigenous and self-created rituals, MJ NEUBERGER explores reconnection with bodies abandoned in intergenerational trauma and colonialism via artworks, interdisciplinary collaborations and social practice. She is artist in residence at Creative Alliance in Baltimore and has presented work at Swale House, Art Resources Transfer, Gathering of the Tribes and Nuyorican Poets Café in New York as well as at exhibitions in Maryland, North Carolina and Indiana. Her writing has appeared in the Village Voice, The Nation and elsewhere.

September 22, 2020 marked the equinox; the beginning of seasonal change and seismic cultural shift.

Collaborators across the country were invited to touch the ground simultaneously with the common intention of bringing bodies into healing.

Below are their impressions.
