Anitra “Nini” Accetturo (May 2022 La Baldi Residency) asked herself Susanne F. Fincher’s question “How can we create a sacred space into which we can invite the Self?” Here’s what came to her high in the beech forests atop Monte Amiata—the largest and highest lava dome of an old volcano in southern Tuscany. Monte Amiata holds the center of the landscape here. It is ringed by medieval villages including Montegiovi where the La Baldi Residency Program is centered.

Fincher “Come possiamo creare uno spazio sacro nel quale invitare il Sé?” Ecco cosa ne è scaturito nelle alte foreste del Monte Amiata - il più ampio e alto duomo di lava di un antico vulcano nel sud della Toscana. Il Monte Amiata si trova al centro del paesaggio di quest’area ed è circondato da paesini medievali fra cui Montegiovi dove il Programma per artisti della Residenza La Baldi ha luogo.

How can we create a sacred space into which we can invite the Self?

Come possiamo creare uno spazio sacro dove possiamo invitare il Sé?

Maybe when we allow our intuition to tell us.

My personal meditation and health care to myself has been running alone in mountains, forests, and alongside seas since I was 13 years old. It is through this energetic movement with rhythmic breathing in an environment where I feel most comfortable- that I am able to release and simply allow whatever needs to arise, to rise.

Exploring Monte Amiata through my trail running one day, I suddenly, unconsciously and intuitively stopped- the sun invited me to look around my surroundings, where I saw instantly that I was at the entrance of a circle made up of eight trees that let me know immediately, this was a spot to create a sacred space to invite my Self. I had no prior thoughts of creating a landscaped mandala during this residency so this idea was not intentional prior to discovering this spot.

Week by week on these runs I let my intuition tell me what and if I would be creating in that sacred space that day or not.

Forse quando ci permettiamo la nostra intuizione di dirci.

La mia meditazione e cura di salute a me stessa sono stata correndo da sola nelle montagne, i boschi e accanto ai mari da quando avevo 13 anni. Tra questo movimento energetico con respirazione ritmica nell’ambiente dove mi sento più comoda- dove riesco di rilascio e semplicemente permettere tutto ciò che deve sorgere, a sorgere.

Esplorando Monte Amiata di correndo sul sentiero un giorno, sono fermata velocemente, intuitivamente, ed inconsciamente- il sole aveva invitato a guardare ciò che mi circonda, dove ho visto istantaneamente che stava all'ingresso di un circo di otto alberi che mi fa sapere immediatamente, questo era lo spot di creare un spazio sacro di invitare mi Se. Non avevo prima i pensieri di creare una mandala sulla terra durante questa residenza, quindi l’idea non era intenzionale prima di aver scoperto lo spazio.

Settimana per settimana su queste corre ho lasciato che il mio intuito mi dicesse che cosa e se farei creare in quel spazio sacro quel giorno o no.

The Eight Trees as the Mandala circle | Gli Otto Alberi come Il cerchio Mandala

Eight is a number of stability, harmony, and rebirth. Eight was considered by Jung a symbol of wholeness because it is a multiple of four, a preeminent symbol of the Self. Eight in mandalas reveals the strong influence of the archetype Self, and can also presage significant changes in your life (Fincher, 105).

Otto è un numero di stabilità, armonia e rinascita. Otto è stato considerato da Jung un simbolo di integrità perché è un multiplo di quattro, un simbolo preminente del Sé. A circular motion representing motion towards (in my work, the Star and Square) and away from a center point. Growth. I wanted a path to the center. The spiral for me also represents putting lessons and experiences lived in the past in moving forward. To me this symbolism can be expressed through the Fibonacci Sequence (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, etc), where the numbers are characterized in such a way that each of the numbers after the first two numbers represent the sum of two numbers before it (0+1= 1, 1+1= 2, 2+1= 3, 3+2=5, 5+3=8). “We can hardly escape the feeling that the unconscious process moves spiral-wise round a center, gradually getting closer, while the characteristics of the center grow more and more distinct” (Jung) A Spiral in a mandala can bring the creator a shaman’s challenge: to translate your knowledge into a form that can be useful to others. (Fincher)

Un movimento circolare che rappresenta il movimento verso (nel mio lavoro, la stella e il quadrato) e lontano da un punto centrale. Crescita. Volevo un percorso verso il centro. La spirale per me rappresenta anche mettere lezioni ed esperienze vissute nel passato per andare avanti. Per me questo simbolismo può essere espresso attraverso la Sequenza di Fibonacci (0+1= 1, 1+1= 2, 2+1= 3, 3+2=5, 5+3=8). “Difficilmente possiamo sfuggire alla sensazione che il processo inconscio si muova a spirale intorno a un centro, gradualmente avvicinandosi, mentre le caratteristiche del centro crescono sempre più distinte" (Jung) Una spirale in un mandala può portare al creatore la sfida di uno sciamano: per tradurre la vostra conoscenza in una forma che può essere utile per gli altri. The Square and The Star | Il Quadrato e La Stella

Rarely seen in nature, a square is usually a product of human effort and often represents stability and security. After completing a preferential shapes test, it was revealed that my current growth process is represented by the square: which symbolizes a person being ready to build, to implement a plan, and to manifest ideas with authenticity and integrity (Arrien). The true current growth process of where one is, what is really going on at one’s core being and where one’s own gifts can be used correctly. I intentionally chose the square as the second component inside the mandala because I felt it reflected my internal state. When a square exists inside a mandala, it can indicate a surge of energy that can be channeled into consciousness and enhanced self-esteem. (Kellogg)

The star was the second element I placed at the center of the mandala after discovering it is the universal principle of self-esteem and confidence. A five-pointed star in a mandala indicates a well-grounded sense of identity, and the ability to bring inspiration into reality (Kellogg, Jung, Fincher).

Raramente visto in natura, un quadrato è di solito un prodotto dello sforzo umano e spesso rappresenta la stabilità e la sicurezza. Dopo aver completato un test di forme preferenziale, è stato rivelato che il mio attuale processo di crescita è rappresentato dal quadrato: che simboleggia una persona pronta a costruire, ad attuare un piano e a manifestare idee con autenticità e integrità (Arrien) Il vero processo di crescita attuale di dove si è, cosa sta realmente accadendo nel proprio essere e dove i propri doni possono essere utilizzati correttamente.Ho scelto intenzionalmente il quadrato come secondo componente all'interno del mandala perché ho sentito che rifletteva il mio stato interno. Quando un quadrato esiste all'interno di un mandala, può indicare un'ondata di energia che può essere incanalata nella coscienza e una maggiore autostima. (Kellogg)

La stella è stato il secondo elemento che ho posto al centro del mandala dopo aver scoperto che è il principio universale di autostima e la fiducia. Una stella a cinque punte in un mandala indica un senso ben radicato di identità, e la capacità di portare ispirazione in realtà (Kellogg, Jung, Fincher).

The Title | Il Titolo

The title of this work came to me in two parts. The first: The only way out is through… reflected a mantra I’ve recited often over the years during periods of transition or hardship, which reflected my internal state upon arrival at this residency. And the existing trail, as the main entry and exit points of the mandala, allowed the mantra to become a pragmatic metaphor for me.

Il titolo di questo lavoro mi è venuto in due parti. La prima: L'unica via d'uscita è attraverso... riflette un mantra che ho recitato spesso nel corso degli anni durante i periodi di transizione o difficoltà, che riflette il mio stato interno al momento dell'arrivo qui. E il percorso esistente, come il principale punto d'ingresso e di uscita del mandala, ha permesso il mantra di diventare una metafora pragmatica per me.

The second part of the title: Finding My Way Back to Center… occurred to me after I incorporated the spiral element to the mandala.

La seconda parte del titolo: Trovare Il Mio Modo di Tornare al Centro... mi è venuta in mente dopo che ho incorporato l'elemento a spirale al elemento al mandala.
